Insurance companies move to patient care
According to Tuesday’s Wall Street Journal, Humana is quickly moving to direct patient care– New deals are expected to expand the number of employee physicians under its umbrella to more than 2,600.
According to Humana CEO Michael B. McCallister, “Integrated health care, as far and as fast as we can take it, is critical to the next chapter of what happens—especially in the Medicare business but potentially for the entire business”
WellPoint’s CareMore and Cigna’s HealthSpring, both acquired in the past few years, reflect similar bets on the future of integrated care.
WEINIGER’s OBSERVATION: As more health providers become corporate employees, their behavior will gradually shift from caring to overworked. Patient’s expectations towards their physicians will similarly change…creating an opportunity for some health providers.
